Random stuff that I've put in the notes of my phone over the years...

Sometimes I'll be driving down the road, sitting in my house, sawing wood on my property, or coming off a conversation with someone...and I'll have a phrase that will plant itself in my head that plays over and over again.  I've had this my whole life and most of the time, if I don't write it down, I'll forget the thought by that night.  It's like it's all-consuming for a bit of time and then non-existent when you want to recall it in a conversation only hours later.

I thought I'd write down some of the random thoughts that I took the time to dictate into my phone so that I wouldn't lose them.  Some of them are good, some of them aren't that special, but all of them hit me in some emotional or spiritual way at the time I had them that my head and heart needed to process.  I'm not sure what value any of these will have for me or anyone else in the future, but here are several of my random thoughts...

- It does no good to have an idea if you don't also have a plan.
- What if the thing that draws mankind to God is not that "Love Wins", but that "Love Weeps".  The former is about ultimate conquest, the latter about intimate interest.
- There are some words that are getting a bad rap in the world (and church), and I want to make sure the baby doesn't get thrown out with the bathwater.  We don't want people to live in fear, but we need the virtue of respect. Just because we don't want to be driven by shame, doesn't mean it's bad to have a conscience.  We hate the idea of rules, but we need the reality of order.  I hear an attack on guilt, but we can't let go of personal responsibility.  We aren't allowed to judge anyone else anymore, but what about exercising discernment? Lastly, we need to make sure that when people are railing against condemnation, they aren't really feeling conviction. Just some thoughts.
- Some people are the adult result of an overstimulated childhood.
- Church - "The bread to free the city is in the house."
- Going to the beach would be fun if it weren't for the sun, sand, and salt water.
- Church Mission - We are here now for those who are not here yet.
- The opposite of love is not hate; the opposite of love is indifference.  Unless I hate some things I am unable to love well.
- Even if you didn't choose it, God can still use it.  God is very much in the after-effects of sin.
- Don't confuse God's grace and mercy with his pleasure and blessing.
- The church is often a place where ambition goes to die.  Where is the desire and drive and dreaming?
- Anger is what happens when pride and hate get together and have a baby.
- Be Present. Work Hard. Have fun.
- It is not circumspect to circumvent your circumstance.  When you steal someone from their struggle, you strip them of their strength.
- I think there's a difference between dreaming and scheming.  Much like there's a different between plotting and planning.
- You can't have powerful personal illustrations in your sermons if you don't get out there and live life.  Remarkable stories come from people who step out and try new things.
- We often hear people talking about the ABC of something or the XYZ of it, but rarely the IMNOP.  What if the staying power in the middle is more important than the beginning or the end of something?
- Often the land between forward and backward is a place called awkward.
- Don't be tempted by the unattempted life.
- Earth is forgiveness school.
- A healthy church is messy, but it's not dirty.
- Am I the gift that keeps on giving or the curse that keeps on costing?
- Church has to move to the place where people don't just care about the body, they build a friendship or two where they start caring about their buddy.
- You can't avoid conflict and fight injustice at the same time.
- Live fiercely, love fiercely, listen fiercely, learn fiercely, laugh fiercely, lead fiercely.
- Unless you're different you will rarely make a difference.
- Life isn't just a game of inches, it's a game of ounces.  Every inch of movement matters and every ounce of energy matters.
- Fill my ministry with Faithfulness and Playfulness.  I want our team to have fun while we're getting stuff done.
- If the devil can't take you out, he'll wear you out.
- I know this, but sometimes forget this...we must take time to engage our children's hearts, inquiring of their hours, taking inventory of the stuff that stocks the shelves of their soul-warehouse.  We have to raise our kids...the don't raise themselves.  They may get older without our help, but they don't grow up without our help.
- So many people drown their lack of knowledge in a sea of words.
- The deliverer is in the details, not just the devil.
- Slow Grow is so much better than Wow Now.
- We shouldn't just tolerate our differences, we should appreciate them.  We don't just put up with diversity, we get lit up by diversity.
- Our church is for anybody, but it's not for everybody.
- Life's not about getting attention, it's about paying attention.
- I scare myself sometimes.  That's what I like about me.  I honestly don't always know what I'm going to do next to surprise me.  Me and me are always catching each other off guard. (weird inner dialogue)
- If leadership isn't earned, it's spurned.  People follow people of prolonged passion not privileged position.
- Don't let what you've lost in your past take away from what you have left of your future.

Well, those are some of the things that I jotted down in my phone over the years.  Random, but things I want to remember.  I love that God made humans to think through things.
