Whatever...for His glory.
Colossians 3:17 - And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving
thanks to God the Father through him.
Colossians
3:23 – So whatever you do, do
it with all your heart as unto the Lord.
But this is the verse I’ve really been focued
on:
I
Corinthians 10:31 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
To bring Glory to God in Menial
Tasks, Basic Needs, Ordinary Duties, & Trivial matters….WHATEVER.
“So whether you wash the dishes or clean the
floors or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you drive your car or mow your
lawn or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you take a shower or go to the
bathroom or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you talk or listen or whatever
you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you work or play or whatever you
do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you pay your bills or do you
taxes or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you hunt or fish or whatever you
do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you shop or travel or whatever
you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you listen in class or do your
homework or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you play a sport or watch a sport
or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you sleep or read or whatever you
do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you care for your children or
love your spouse or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you walk your dog or watch a
movie or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
“So whether you stay single or get married or
whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.”
The Main
Idea:
Worship is about consciously giving God glory
in every area, attitude, and activity of my life.
I Corinthians 10:31 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.

I do think it’s
important to understand that every single one of these things can go from a
vehicle through which we can be transported into worship of God to an idol that
ultimately replaces God. Sports can go from enjoyment to
idolatry. Nature can turn into New
Age. Intellectualism can turn into Humanism. The Created things can begin to eclipse the
Creator. It’s a slippery slope and you can see the Bible trying to get us to
guard from this subtle shift…
Romans 1:25 - They exchanged the truth about
God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the
Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.
It’s interesting,
because only 5 verses earlier, Paul was explaining that God can be seen and
worshipped through the things that he has made for our enjoyment…
Romans
1:20
- For since the creation of the world God’s invisible
qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being
understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
But it shows you
that God desires for us to see everything around us as a gift from him that is
meant to call our attention and point our affection to the worship of our
Creator.
Even the smallest
things…
Brother
Lawrence (maybe you’ve heard that name
before) was a monk in the 1600’s who spent the greater part of his life in
a Monastery in Paris. They say that he was kind of awkward and a klutz. He was
always dropping things or messing something up. People didn’t really trust him
with anything important so he was the monastery dishwasher who worked in the
kitchen. But, even though he spent most of his life as just a kitchen maid, he
considered it a high calling because he considered everything he did as an act
of worship to God. He called it “practicing the presence of God” and wrote a
book about it with that very title. He felt that his whole life should be one
giant prayer. that there shouldn’t be separate times for prayer or for work,
but that every moment was one continual prayer.
He wrote in this book, and I quote…
“The time of business does not with me differ from the
time of prayer; and in the noise and clatter of my kitchen, while several
persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as
great tranquility as I were upon my knees at the blessed sacrament.
So Lord of all pots and
pans, make me a saint by getting meals and washing up the plates!” – Brother Lawrence (17th Century Monk)
Martin Luther, the 16th
century monk largely responsible for the protestant reformation, said it this
way…
“A dairymaid can milk cows to the glory of God.”
– Martin Luther (16th Century Monk)
I Corinthians 10:31 – So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.
I want to live this kind of life…
